Lunalilo the elected king
Kamehameha V died without naming an heir to his throne . Therefore under the constitution of 1864 the legislature would be tasked with electing the next king. Lunalilo was the highest chief at the time and could have claimed the throne as birthright, but instead he held an election for the people to decide.
Social - The people hadn't voted before, so the people respected Lunalilo for his choice.
Political- Under the constitution of 1864 the legislature would have to elect the new king/ queen.
Intellectual - The way Lunalilo wanted the people to choose him not the government. This changed the way people thought about the monarchy.
Cultural-Traditionally the ruling king or queen would be tasked with selecting an heir before their death.
Economic - Lunalilo inherited a weak and unstable economic situation in Hawaii, the once prominent whaling industry had come and gone. And the sugar industry had replaced it, but the tax on exporting sugar to America was too high to make a profit.
